Child and Teen Therapy
Support for Children, Teens, and the Families Who Care for Them
Children and teens do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling.
Instead, stress may show up through changes in mood, behavior, sleep, school performance, relationships, or confidence. Your child may seem more anxious, withdrawn, irritable, overwhelmed, or unlike themselves.
At Rise & Restore Counseling, our clinicians provide compassionate, age-appropriate therapy for children and teens ages 4 and older. We create a space where young clients feel comfortable, understood, and supported while also helping parents and caregivers better understand their child’s needs and how to support them outside of therapy.
Sessions are available in person at our Roxbury office and virtually throughout New Jersey when appropriate.
When Therapy May Be Helpful
Child or teen therapy may be beneficial when your child is experiencing:
Anxiety, worry, or frequent overthinking
Depression, sadness, or low motivation
Emotional outbursts or difficulty managing feelings
Low self-esteem or self-doubt
School stress or academic concerns
Friendship or peer difficulties
Bullying
Family changes, separation, or divorce
Grief and loss
Trauma or difficult life experiences
Trouble adjusting to change
Anger, irritability, or withdrawal
Difficulty with boundaries or communication
Identity concerns
Stress related to growing up
Sometimes parents know something is wrong but are unsure what is causing it. Therapy can help uncover what may be happening beneath the surface and give your child a healthier way to express and manage what they are experiencing.
Therapy That Meets Them Where They Are
Therapy with children and teens should not feel like another place where they are being corrected, judged, or told what to do.
Our clinicians focus on building trust first. Sessions are tailored to your child’s age, personality, needs, and comfort level.
Depending on the child, therapy may include conversation, creative activities, games, coping skills, mindfulness, emotional education, problem-solving, and opportunities to practice communication.
For teens, sessions may focus on stress, relationships, self-esteem, boundaries, identity, family dynamics, school pressures, and difficult emotions.
The goal is to help your child feel more confident, emotionally aware, and better able to manage challenges both now and in the future.
Our Approach
Our therapists use evidence-based and developmentally appropriate approaches, including:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills
Mindfulness
Trauma-informed therapy
Strengths-based therapy
Somatic and grounding techniques
Play-based and creative interventions
EMDR when clinically appropriate
Treatment is personalized to your child rather than based on a one-size-fits-all plan.
The Role of Parents and Caregivers
Parents and caregivers are an important part of the process.
Depending on your child’s age and needs, your clinician may involve you through parent check-ins, family sessions, skill-building, or recommendations for support at home.
At the same time, children and teens also need a level of privacy in therapy in order to feel safe opening up. Your therapist will explain how confidentiality works and when information may need to be shared for safety or treatment purposes.
Our goal is not to place blame. It is to help your family better understand one another, strengthen communication, and create more support outside of the therapy room.
What to Expect
The first sessions usually focus on understanding your child’s concerns, history, strengths, relationships, and current stressors. A lot of parents ask- Will the first appointment include my child? This is decided individually based on your child’s age, needs, and the reason for seeking therapy. In some cases, the first appointment may begin with a parent or caregiver only. In others, the child may attend part or all of the session. Our team will explain what to expect before the appointment.
Parents may be included in the beginning of the process, especially when working with younger children. Your clinician will then recommend a treatment plan based on your child’s needs and goals.
Progress may include:
Better emotional regulation
Improved communication
Increased confidence
Healthier coping skills
Reduced anxiety or distress
Stronger relationships
Greater insight into emotions and behavior
Improved ability to manage change
Therapy takes time, and every child progresses differently. Your clinician will continue to assess what is helping and adjust treatment as needed.
