Perimenopause Therapy

Support for the Emotional Changes No One Prepared You For

Perimenopause can affect far more than your menstrual cycle. It can influence your mood, sleep, energy, concentration, relationships, confidence, and overall sense of self.

You may feel more anxious, irritable, overwhelmed, tearful, or emotionally reactive than usual. Perhaps you are struggling with brain fog, disrupted sleep, changes in your body, or a growing sense that you no longer feel like yourself.

For many women, these changes occur during an already demanding stage of life—while managing a career, raising children, caring for aging parents, navigating relationship changes, or carrying the needs of everyone around them.

You are not imagining what you are experiencing, and you do not have to navigate it alone.

How Perimenopause Can Affect Mental Health

Hormonal changes during perimenopause can intensify existing mental health concerns or create emotional symptoms that feel unfamiliar and difficult to manage.

You may be experiencing:

  • Increased anxiety, worry, or panic

  • Irritability, anger, or emotional sensitivity

  • Depression, sadness, or loss of motivation

  • Mood changes that feel unpredictable

  • Sleep difficulties and ongoing exhaustion

  • Brain fog, forgetfulness, or difficulty concentrating

  • Reduced confidence or changes in self-esteem

  • Feeling disconnected from your body or identity

  • Increased stress or difficulty coping

  • Changes in intimacy, sexuality, or desire

  • Relationship or communication difficulties

  • Grief related to aging, fertility, or life transitions

  • Feeling dismissed, misunderstood, or unheard by others

  • Difficulty balancing work, parenting, caregiving, and personal needs

These experiences can be confusing, especially when you have always viewed yourself as capable, emotionally steady, or able to manage stress independently.

Therapy Can Help You Feel Like Yourself Again

Therapy provides a space to understand what is happening emotionally, identify what you need, and develop healthier ways to manage the challenges of this transition.

At Rise & Restore Counseling, we help women explore the connection between hormonal changes, emotional well-being, relationships, past experiences, and current life stressors.

Therapy may help you:

  • Better understand your emotional and physical changes

  • Manage anxiety, irritability, and mood fluctuations

  • Develop tools for coping with stress and overwhelm

  • Improve sleep-related habits and emotional regulation

  • Communicate your needs more clearly

  • Strengthen boundaries at home and at work

  • Navigate changes in relationships and intimacy

  • Process grief related to aging or changing roles

  • Reconnect with your identity, confidence, and values

  • Feel less alone and more supported during this transition

Therapy is not about convincing you that your symptoms are “all in your head.” It is about helping you feel heard, informed, and empowered as you move through a significant stage of life.

More Than Hormones

Perimenopause often overlaps with other major life changes.

You may be caring for children while also supporting aging parents. You may be reevaluating your career, marriage, friendships, health, or the direction of your life. Changes in your body or sexuality may affect how you see yourself or connect with your partner.

You may also feel frustrated after being told that your symptoms are simply stress, aging, or something you should tolerate.

Our clinicians offer a compassionate space to explore the full experience—not just the symptoms.

A Collaborative and Personalized Approach

Your experience of perimenopause is personal, and your therapy should be too.

Our clinicians use evidence-based approaches to help you better understand your emotions, strengthen coping skills, and create meaningful changes in your daily life.

Depending on your needs, therapy may incorporate:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy

  • Mindfulness and grounding techniques

  • Trauma-informed therapy

  • Somatic and body-based approaches

  • Strengths-based and person-centered therapy

  • Support for relationship and communication concerns

Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to create a treatment approach that reflects your goals, experiences, and current needs.

Therapy as Part of Your Overall Care

Therapy can complement—but does not replace—care from your primary care provider, gynecologist, psychiatrist, or another qualified medical professional.

Because perimenopause can involve both emotional and physical symptoms, we encourage clients to discuss significant changes with their healthcare providers. With your written permission, your therapist may also collaborate with members of your medical care team when appropriate.

Medical providers are welcome to refer patients who may benefit from additional emotional and behavioral health support during perimenopause.
